These RGB Lamps from AliExpress Actually Don’t Suck (Shocking, I Know)

The blog explores the rapidly evolving convergence of work, travel, and technology, ushering in an era of digital nomads.

I bought these in December, been using them daily since January

Look, I’ve been buying random crap from AliExpress for, like, 6 years now, and most of it ends up in my “why did I buy this” drawer. But these RGB floor lamps? They’re still sitting in my living room and bedroom, working perfectly, after 4 months of daily use.

I wasn’t even planning to review these things, but people keep asking about them when they see my setup. Plus my girlfriend keeps telling me I should actually write about the stuff I buy instead of just hoarding it like some kind of gadget dragon.

Why I Even Bought These Things

So back in December I’m scrolling AliExpress at like 1am (classic mistake), and I see these “RGB Dream Color Floor Lamps” for $35. My first thought was “Yeah right, probably garbage that’ll break in a week.” But I needed better lighting anyway because my apartment looked like a dentist office with these horrible fluorescent bulbs.

I’d been looking at Philips Hue stuff, but holy shit, $200+ for a floor lamp? I’m not made of money here. So I figure, what’s the worst that happens with $35? I waste the price of a dinner.

Ended up ordering two different sizes because I’m an idiot and have zero self-control when things are cheap. Got the short one thinking it might work by my TV setup, and the tall one because it looked cool in the photos.

The Waiting Game (AKA Standard AliExpress Hell)

Ordered December 15th. They showed up January 8th. So like 3.5 weeks, which is pretty normal for AliExpress free shipping. The tracking was typical Chinese seller stuff updates for a few days, then radio silence for two weeks, then suddenly “out for delivery.”

I was honestly expecting beat-up boxes with broken stuff inside. That’s happened before. But these arrived in decent shape. One box had a dent, but everything inside was wrapped in bubble wrap and foam. No damage.

Putting These Together (Not as Painful as Expected)

The instruction manual is definitely Google Translated from Chinese. My favorite line was “install the light pole with gentle but firm pressure.” Like, okay, thanks for that extremely specific guidance.

The short 40 cm lamp took maybe 10 minutes. Just screw the base on, plug it in, and done.

The tall one was more annoying; you have to connect like 4 sections and thread this wire through the whole thing. It took me about 25 minutes because I screwed up the wire threading the first time and had to start over.

Oh, and heads up, they don’t include power adapters. Just USB cables. The listing mentions this, but it’s easy to miss. Had to dig around for phone chargers. Make sure whatever you use is 2A, or the lights will be dim as hell.

Also need AAA batteries for the remotes. Because of course they don’t include those either.

First Time Turning Them On

Plugged in the short one, grabbed the remote (which feels cheap as hell, btw), hit power, and… damn. Way brighter than I expected. Even on the lowest setting, it lit up half my room.

Started hitting the color buttons, and that’s when I got interested. The red actually looks like red, not some weird orange-red like most cheap LEDs. Blue looks proper blue. The colors are actually pretty accurate.

But the thing I really wanted to test was the music sync because that’s usually where cheap stuff fails hard.

The Music Sync Thing (This Is Where I Got Surprised)

Connected my Bluetooth speaker, put on some Disclosure, and… it actually worked? Like really worked, not just flashing randomly when there’s bass.

The lamp was pulsing perfectly with the beat. Tried some different genres:

  • Electronic music = perfect sync
  • Hip hop = really good with the bass drops
  • Rock music is decent but responds more to drums than guitars
  • Classical = pretty much nothing happening

You can adjust the sensitivity, which helps. Had to crank it up pretty high in my apartment, but once I found the right setting, it’s been solid.

Had some friends over last weekend, and we were just watching this thing pulse with the music. My buddy Jake goes, “Dude, this is like having a disco in your living room for 35 bucks,” and honestly, he’s not wrong.

What It’s Like Actually Living With These

It’s been 4 months now, and I use these things every single day. The short one lives next to my TV, and I turn it on basically every evening. Usually set to orange or red when I’m watching Netflix. Way better than having bright overhead lights.

For gaming it’s pretty fun. Not gonna make me better at Valorant, but the music sync with game audio definitely adds to the experience. Horror games are especially goodโ€”having the lights flash when you take damage is way more immersive than I expected.

The tall one in my bedroom corner has basically replaced my main light. Bright white when I need to find stuff, dim purple when I want to chill, and warm colors when my girlfriend’s doing her nighttime routine.

Weirdest benefit? These are amazing for Zoom calls. The soft lighting makes me look way better on camera than harsh overhead lights. Got compliments during work meetings, which… I never thought I’d care about, but here we are.

The Remote Situation (My Main Complaint)

These remotes are trash. Like, they work, but they feel like they came from a dollar store. Buttons are mushy, you have to press them hard, and after a few months, one of mine has a sticky button.

The layout makes no sense either. Power is at the top, brightness at the bottom. Still hit wrong buttons sometimes.

But the range is decent, and it has timer settings so you can have it turn off automatically. Good for falling asleep to ambient lighting.

All the Different Color Modes

The listing talks about “multiple dynamic modes” but doesn’t explain what they actually do:

Static colors – Just solid colors. All the basic ones look good.

Smooth – Slowly cycles through colors over like 2-3 minutes. Really relaxing to watch.

Jump – Rapid color changes. Kinda seizure-inducing but fun when you’re drunk.

Fade – Colors gradually brighten and dim while changing. This one’s actually really nice.

Flash/Strobe – Exactly what it sounds like. Used it maybe twice.

The music sync works with all of these which is pretty cool.

How Much Do They Actually Cost to Run?

My electric bill hasn’t changed at all since I started using these daily. LEDs don’t use much power.

They also barely get warm even after being on for hours. Some cheap LED strips I’ve had got hot enough to burn you but these stay cool.

Still Working After 4 Months

Both lamps work exactly like they did on day one. All the LEDs still work, the colors still look right, no flickering or dead spots. The actual lamps feel solidโ€”bases are stable, and nothing’s loose.

The remotes are definitely showing wear, though. Getting less responsive, and one button sticks sometimes. But for 35 bucks I can live with crappy remotes.

Compared to the Expensive Stuff

Before buying these, I looked at Philips Hue and LIFX. Holy crap, everything was expensive. Like $150-300 per lamp.

Obviously the name-brand stuff probably has better remotes and fancy app controls. But for just wanting colorful lights that sync with music? These work just as well for a fraction of the price.

Who Should Actually Buy These

Get these if you:

  • Want RGB lighting but don’t want to spend a fortune
  • Don’t mind waiting a month for shipping
  • Think music sync sounds cool (it actually works)
  • Want to try ambient lighting without a huge investment
  • Can deal with a crappy remote

Don’t get these if you:

  • Need premium build quality
  • Want app controls and smart home stuff
  • Hate dealing with AliExpress
  • Need professional lighting
  • Want bright task lighting (these are for ambiance)

Random Other Stuff I Noticed

The 40cm one fits perfectly next to my monitor. Creates nice background lighting without being distracting.

My cat is obsessed with the color changes. She just sits there staring when it’s cycling colors.

Remote batteries last about 6-8 weeks with daily use.

Music sync sensitivity is different in every room. Had to adjust it way differently in my bedroom vs. living room.

RGB Lamps from AliExpress Actually Don't Suck

Bottom Line

Look, these aren’t going to win any build quality awards. The remotes suck, and you’re dealing with AliExpress shipping times. But they work way better than they have any right to for $35.

I use them every day; they still work perfectly after 4 months, and they’ve made my place way more enjoyable to hang out in. The music sync never gets old, and having different lighting for different moods is actually super useful.

If you’re curious about RGB lighting but don’t want to drop $200+ on Philips stuff, these are perfect for testing the waters. Worst case, you’re out 40 bucks and you learn RGB lights aren’t for you. Best case, you love them like I do.

Would I buy them again? Yeah. Have I recommended them to friends? Multiple times. Three people have bought them based on my recommendation, and they all love them.

Sometimes you get lucky with AliExpress and find something that’s actually good. These lamps are one of those times.
